Art & Design

Intent

At Moorhill Primary School we understand that creativity and imagination should be celebrated and nurtured within school and outside of it. Our bespoke curriculum is designed to cover all aspects of the National Curriculum through the topics we teach.

The areas of the National Curriculum have been split into the skills, knowledge and vocabulary needed to develop in the subject of Art and Design. Together this creates our Curriculum map, which allows and ensures there are opportunities to experience and develop a structured progression of skills and knowledge that builds upon children’s prior learning and experiences.   In each area of art there are learning sequences that have been planned using prior learning of skills and knowledge.

Art is promoted in the school to be enjoyable and that everyone’s opinion and interpretation of the different aspects are valued and important. Pupils have opportunities to learn about a variety of media, including drawing, collage, paint, textiles, 3D structure, printing and ICT.

Implementation

Our art curriculum has been designed following the National Curriculum for Art and Design for KS1 and KS2 and The Early Years Foundation Stage FrameworkThe Art Curriculum map is bespoke to our school and our topics, so where possible, links to have been made to the teaching of skills and learning about Artists.

At Moorhillthere are a range of art resources that children get the opportunity to explore and experience through the teaching of art and other curriculum areas.

Impact

Our curriculum for Art has been carefully planned to give children the skills and knowledge to develop in the different areas of art and to have opportunities to experience and explore new aspects of Art.  It also allows children to develop their expressive language, be able to make comparisons and ask questions.

We measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:

  • Pupil discussions and interviews about their learning
  • An assessment of standards achieved judged against the skills and knowledge outlined in our Curriculum map (three times per year)
  • Evidence of pupils work, gathered at the end of units

By the time our children leave Moorhill Primary we want them to:

  • Be able to apply skills they have learnt and share knowledge.
  • Be able to evaluate their own work.
  • Be confident in the way they express themselves and have an enjoyment of art.
