Intent

At Moorhill Primary School we understand that creativity and imagination should be celebrated and nurtured within school and outside of it. The curriculum is designed to cover all aspects of the National Curriculum, giving children a range of opportunities to develop their skills in a variety of media, including drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, print and ICT. Children will learn about a variety of artists ad designers. They will use these as inspiration when creating their own pieces of art.

In each area of art there are learning sequences that have been planned using prior learning of skills and knowledge. Skills and knowledge are built upon as they progress through the school to enable the children to apply skills previously learnt.

Art is promoted in the school to be enjoyable and that everyone’s opinion and interpretation of the different aspects are valued and important. They are given time to evaluate their own and others work.

Implementation

Our art curriculum has been designed following the National Curriculum for Art and Design for KS1 and KS2 and The Early Years Foundation Stage Framework. The Art Curriculum map is bespoke to our school and our topics, so where possible, links to have been made to the teaching of skills and learning about Artists.

At Moorhill, there are a range of art resources that children get the opportunity to explore and experience through the teaching of art and other curriculum areas.

Impact

Our curriculum for Art has been carefully planned to give children the skills and knowledge to develop in the different areas of art and to have opportunities to experience and explore new aspects of Art.  It also allows children to develop their expressive language, be able to make comparisons and ask questions.

We measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:

  • Pupil discussions and interviews about their learning
  • An assessment of standards achieved judged against the skills and knowledge outlined in our Curriculum map (three times per year)
  • Evidence of pupils work, gathered at the end of units

By the time our children leave Moorhill Primary we want them to:

  • Be able to apply skills they have learnt and share knowledge.
  • Be able to evaluate their own work.
  • Be confident in the way they express themselves and have an enjoyment of art.

Learners with Special Educational Needs

At Moorhill, we scaffold and adapt the learning in Art and design to enable all learners to succeed. Learning is adapted through:

- Explicit teaching and modelling

- Adapted resources

- Pictorial examples

- Adult support
